With the housing market getting further and further down into a slump, we are seeing foreclosures still on the rise. There are some neighborhoods that you drive through and immediately notice that more of the homes are empty than there are those that are occupied. A great deal of these homes aren't for sale, but have been foreclosed on. They are now unoccupied and bank-owned, just waiting for someone to come along and take possession, hopefully legally. When neighborhoods have homes that are sitting empty due to foreclosures, there can be an increase in crime that is certainly undesirable for the other people that occupy the area.
While there are signs on these houses that warn people that they are not to be entered under any circumstances, there are certain elements of society that don't take heed to these. That is the element of people that commit the crimes which can destroy the home values of other owners in neighborhoods and can also affect them in other negative ways. If you are in a neighborhood that has homes that are in foreclosure, there are things that you can do to help protect your neighborhood from being victimized by foreclosure crimes.
One of the very important things that you can do is to organize a neighborhood watch. This way, you have an entire group of people who are working towards a common goal and when one person is unavailable, the rest are still watching out for everyone's property, including the one(s) that are empty. If you are unsure of how to organize this on your own, call your local police department and they are typically more than happy to assist you in setting up a meeting to get things started. Not only do they provide this service to help you, but it can also benefit them to have some extra eyes on the area.
It is generally quite easy for criminals to know which homes have been foreclosed on, whether the signage is up or not, because of the neglect that is obvious when the home remains unoccupied for a time. There are things that you can do that will make it less apparent that a home in your neighborhood is no longer occupied. It may take some work, but it can avoid a lot of problems with the foreclosure crimes. Mow the yard of the home once a week or so. Pick up any newspapers, door hangers, political notices, or other things that are still being left on the doorstep or porch area. Rake the leaves if they are fallen and building up. Doing these sorts of things will go a long ways towards avoiding crime and they will also keep your neighborhood looking nice.
If you do see that there are strangers who seem to not belong in the area, especially if they are seemingly interested in the foreclosed home(s), inform your local law enforcement office. Don't worry that you might be bothering them with something that was completely legitimate, such as a bank or real estate professional looking at the property. This is a case where it is far better to be safe than sorry. The police will depend on citizens like you to let them know what is going on and if there seems to be a problem, they will likely increase the patrol of your area.
Foreclosure crimes are on the rise, increasing exponentially as the housing market continues to decline. Vacant homes are often open invitations for people with less than honorable intentions and can affect you and your neighborhood. Taking the above suggestions into consideration can protect you and your neighbors from becoming victims yourselves, as well as keeping your property values high by avoiding an increase in the crime levels of the area.
